Hormones and Sebum
Sebaceous glands are found at the base of hair follicles and produce the body’s natural oil, sebum. When this oil is in balance it serves to protect and moisturize the skin and hair. However when there is an over supply, the sebum can mix with dead skin cells and become trapped in the pores, resulting in comedones and milia (blackheads and whiteheads). Bacteria can form in the congested areas and becomes inflammatory in the form of cysts and pustules. Sebaceous glands are found in the highest density around the face, back and shoulders, as a result these are common areas for acne breakouts."
